Internal balancing or external balancing?
Internal balancing or external balancing?
OK well I got my block back last week from the machine shop and it all checks out good but he had to bore it .020 over, I really wish he would have just went 30 like I suggested but what ever. At least my rods were good also and they are powdered metal!
So now I am having a hard time figuring out what to buy. I am trying to stay as close to stock as I can. Mainly because I don't have the extra money for vortecs at this time. I will admit that this is my first "solo" motor also. Thats why all the questions.
Here we go. I know that most if not all 350's are internally balanced but if I look at rotating kits the internal balanced is twice as much as the external ($1,063.95) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ESP-13020L020/ .
Would it be a problem if I bought the external ($596.95) and would I have to modify anything? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ESP-B13403L02068/
Or should I go with buying just a crank, pistons, rings, and bearings? I have the old rods that he told were good and once I got the pistons he would press them on for $80.
I just don't want to screw ant thing up and want it to be right.
Here is the parts I am looking at if I use my rods.

or

I'm not positive they are what I need or not?
I didn't add the rod bearings cause thats a no brainier
A bit of info on what I have, 94 Chevy with TBI 305 that I'm swapping to 350 TBI. I have all the stuff to convert to 350 TBI injectors comp all of it. I was able to get a L31 long block for cheep but heads were shot. So my foundation is a L31 block.
If any one has any advice it would sure be helpful at this point. Sorry if Im in the wrong area.

Re: Internal balancing or external balancing?
The '86-up 305s and 350s have an external balance at the rear, but still use the internal-balance dampers at the front. This was because of the change to the 1-piece rear seal.
You need to go whichever way your block is set up for.
For a TBI build, you don't need any aftermarket crankshaft, unless you're doing a stroker. Stock cranks are fine to 450 HP and 6200 RPM.
