Gas filler neck repair?

So when I fill my tank it reeks like gas and I have some spilling out of the gas door. Not a ton but enough to look like crap. We have full serve around here so I don't know what some gas station idiot managed to do but the bottom of the filler neck is ovaled a bit so that the cap doesnt seal properly.

I've done a search and most people are talking about replacing tanks and pumps and stuff like that. I was wondering if I just took a thick rag (prevent any possible spark) and a big set of pliers would it be possible to give it a bit of a squeeze back towards being round again? Anyone done this before? I'm planning on selling the car soon and these things arn't really worth a whole heck of a lot any more so I'm not wanting to spend too much money fixing things up before i sell it.

Thanks

How did it get misformed? I assume the bottom is pulled down as though someone leaned on the nozzle? If its just the lower part that got bent somehow from the filler nozzle, you can use a crescent wrench to slowly straighten out the lower edge until its back to its original shape, and then smooth out any nicks by hand with some oiled fine grit sand-paper.

If its actually shaped like an oval as though it got pinched, then try a large set of pliars and the rag to squeeze it back into shape.

Other option, of course, is to not fill it up all the way, but with it like that, you may not pass emmissions as the CCP system doesnt work when the tank doesnt seal.

Re: Gas filler neck repair?

I have rusted out area around the gas filler neck. It has been suggested to me that i spray foam around the neck and then fibreglass on top -- joining it to the metal left on the other side of the gas filler neck?? Please help

whoever suggested that is a moron. if you have a hole rusted in the tank anywhere you need to either replace it, or take it somewhere experienced with gas tank repairs to weld up the hole.

Re: Gas filler neck repair?

Sorry, guess i didn't explain it very well. It is not the gas tank or neck filler that is rusted out--that is all intact--it is not an inspection issue at this time.
the problem is the metal of the car body that goes around the neck filler is rusted out on one side. hope this gives a better idea. Appreciate any help

o, its its just a body panel thats rusted then you can just drop the tank and repair the sheet metal. you just dont want to try and weld anything with the gas tank so close.
