Refreshed 305 running rough after attempting to try it on the road
Here is a little background on my car. It started as a 2.8 carbed engine with a 4 speed sagnaw in it. This winter i swapped a 305 ho out of a 85 camaro with a t5 trans. The mechanical pump wouldnt work on this engine so i ran what i thought was a low pressure pump. After driving it for a few days the oil got thinned out and it spun 4 rod bearings as well and ruined the crank.
I took the crank, pistons and rods out of a running engine with a cracked block and installed them in the 85 engine with new main and rod bearings, as well as new piston rings. I had new valve seals put in the heads and had the guides checked. Followed a gm service manual to specs, all the bearing clearances were in spec.
The engine has a edelbrock performer intake and a holley 600 carb, new spark plugs, wires, cap and buttom. The fuel pressure is set around 6 psi, the pressure gauge i used wasnt marked the greatest. When i adjusted the valves i over adjusted them and there were a few back fires though the exhaust and the carb.
I had the valves adjusted pretty good and the engine was running great, had it through a few warm up cycles. I went to take it out for a test drive and i didnt get out of the parking lot and it died, it started back up but it was running really rough, had to give it fuel to keep it running. I figured that my lifters may have gotten pumped up more and threw my valve adjustment out so i tried setting the valves again. It runs a little better but it is still rough, it almost sounds like i have a dead cylinder but i did a compression test and everything is within 10-15 psi of each other.
Is it possible that the power valve got messed up with either a piece of dirt or the carb got messed up from the back firing. Im stumped, im out of ideas of what to try. Can someone please help

It is possible because backfiring isn't good on a carb, but also check your plug wires and distributor.

The distrubtor is fine, i had it tightened before i drove it, and all the wires have fire.

I am at a loss. Have you changed the fuel filter to see if maybe you have picked up some trash?

Sorry i havent poseted in a bit, i just moved and i had no internet. It has a see through inline filter. I found 2 collapsed lifters and my vacuum pod on my hei distributor let go. Replace the lifters, push rods, and vacuum pod. Had a buddy that really knows what he's doing set the valves. Started it up and ran a little boggy, got mad and came right onto it outside the shop and layed some rubber to clean out the fouled up cylinders. It purrs like a kitten now.
