Fuel Pump Removal

I need to replace my fuel pump and fuel sending unit on my v6 Camaro, the previous owner did me the "favor" of cutting open the metal above the fuel tank so that I can just pull it out from the top without removing the tank. The question I have is how do I remove the unit from the tank? The shop manual mentions a specific tool (a GM tool number), but I was wondering if there was some other tool/method that would suffice? If no such method exists then what tool do I need?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump Removal

Just use a flat screwdriver and a hammer to spin the retaining ring. It has bent out tabs so you can gently tap it. No need for special tools there.

There are 3 tabs if I remember correctly. alternate between them while tapping or you'll throw the ring off center and it will be harder to spin.

Re: Fuel Pump Removal

yeah i would just drop the tank. jack the car up and support it on the frame rails not the rearend. this way the rearend will be hanging down enought to remove the tank. theres two bolts, one on each strap, and a heat shield you need to remove. undo the fuel lines and filler neck and it will come right out. its hard to get the pump out with cutting the whole like was done to your car.... the fuel lines are decently long... easier this way then the tank is in front of you.. hope this helps

Worked like a charm!

I did not have to drop the tank because the previous owner installed removable hoses so I just disconnected them and pulled it right out.

that is why you install a hatch and modify the vehicle the way GM should have.
