Faulty ignition lock or faulty mechanic
Hey thirdgenigans,
I've searched the forums but could'nt find anything for this one. I've recently lost my keys and just finished wiring in the resistor in lieu of getting a factor key made. All went well, found the right resistor after about the 8th and installed the aftermarket ign. cylinder w/o the puller - you just need 3 hands and strong thumbs.
Anyway - tried to cut corners with an Autozone cylinder, yeah I know, and luckily when trying the eighth resistor, the one that worked, the cylinder fell apart. The tumbler remained intact but the part that you grap to start the engine popped out. It began to first come out from one end then as I continued to rotate it, it eventually fell out. The tumbler remained in column and the VATS wires dangling out.
I figured faulty AZone part so I took it back and got a napa cylinder and with just the same # of turns the outer part feels like it jamming and wanting to pop out again. I tried to pull it out to confirm my suspicion but it didn't come out though I feel it jamming and extending farther out of the column than i think is normal.
Is this common for these cylinders or did I install wrong. Not a whole lot to mess up on install - only a torx screw and a pair of wires(that I don't need anymore) from what I see.
Any ideas???

Re: Faulty ignition lock or faulty mechanic
phew...... I get to keep my shadetree mechanic credentials!
I almost knew there wasn't a trick the install but also just thought it was odd that two different cylinders might fail the same way around the same # of turns.
Really, my fear was that I was going to have to go to the stealer for a $113 dollar ign. cylinder in case the aftermarket models didn't work out for some reason.
thanks!
