1987 camaro 305 LG4

When the car is heated up it gets really hard to start up. The starter barely manages to rotate the crank. I would keep trying until eventually it picks up some rpms and then starts very easily. The voltage on the battery stays above 10V when cranking.

What could be causing this?

Check the timing. If it's advanced to much, it would be hard to start when hot.

 

Do you have headers?

 

Your starter could be flying south.

 

i have the same problem. got a little better when i replaced the battery, but still noticeable. i have shorty headers and a wrap around heat shield - but it is starting to fall apart due to age

 

I don't have headers, the timing is set at 6 btdc. So you think the starter is going bad? What in it goes bad? Is it repairable?

 

Maybe starter. My stock starter used to suffer pretty bad from heatsoak from the exhaust, and behaved just like yours sounds.

It finally died altogether. Pulled it apart and found one brush completely missing, another cocked to one side and chewing thru the armature windings. Lots of rust baked mud everywhere, looked like it had been in a river for years - wonder it didn't die long before it did.

Installed a new mini starter, which also solved the heatsoak problem as an added bonus.
