305 TPI cam selection advice

Hey i have a 1987 IROC with a 305 TPI. I have to rebuild the engine and I figured if i have to rebuild the whole thing, might as well add some horsepower with an upgraded cam. Does anyone know of the best Cam for this engine? And also what other ways could I increase the horsepower?

Thanks,
Spencer

Re: 305 TPI cam selection advice

Best way to increase the HP is a "bore kit". 45 CID. Cheapest HP money can buy.

DO NOT spend money on a 305 short block!!! Get yourself a "bore kit" out of a 87-2000 truck or Caprice, and throw the 305 short block in the trash. Use your existing roller lifter apparatus if your "bore kit" comes without one.

TPI is very particular about the design of the cam. It relies especially on the intake valve closing event occurring at the right time, to produce the effect that results in the "tuned" behavior. It's SUPER EASY to put an otherwise "good" cam in a TPI motor, and end up considerably slower than stock.

For your motor with the "bore kit" you'll be putting in it, I'd suggest the Comp "502" grind. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-502-8/

This may be a stupid question.... but Will the heads and intake for the TPI bolt to that block?
