engine or trans issue?
got an 84 camaro 355 sbc engine,700r4 trans with 3000 stall conv.
the trans also has a shift kit, corvette srvo, vane upgrade, new input sprag, and rebuild.
the issue im having is the transshift fine threw all the gears and while in third gear about 5000rpm and 65mph the car acts like it hits a rev limiter and doesnt wanna accelerate anymore. what would cause that? i have no upgraded ignition or msd to provoke that. anyone have a solution? thanks

Re: engine or trans issue?
Some people don't realize the small cap has to have an ECM to advance the timing and try to use one without it, (forklifts do) but the timing being stationary affects higher RPM greatly.
Just wanted to rule that out.
I think Hipster is right that it is a fuel delivery problem.
It's pretty hard to put an inline pressure gauge in a carb setup, but the symptoms you describe are at max fuel demand at the carb.
Need to take the 50/50 and get the fuel pressure at max demand.
If it goes lean it will do exactly as you describe with backfiring if you keep holding it down. If it runs past 5K easily in first and 2nd gear, it isn't the ignition.
You mention carb set at 6 psi. Does this car have an in-tank fuel pump?
Trying to pull gas thru one that is powered off will do what you describe.

Re: engine or trans issue?
EDIT: On second thought, exhaust back-pressure (partially clogged cat) or wrong stock heads could also cause this.

Re: engine or trans issue?
Damn. Ya got me stumped. Short of putting it on a dyno and watching the timing light and exhaust gasses when it lays down, I don't know what to tell ya.

Re: engine or trans issue?
Is this just another 700 with the 3-4 clutches burnt? 'Cause the only way you're getting that engine speed with that wheel speed is if you have rear axle gears in the 5.3x range, or if you're trans is slipping BAD.

Re: engine or trans issue?
It must be in second. Looking back at my videos, I'm at 65 @ 5K in second with a 700R4 and 3.27's .
Still, the problem is the same. If it lays down, something is happening that we should be able to put our finger on.
If the trans was slipping, he'd be redlining the motor dragging a cloud of trans smoke.
Aaron_SK may have touched on a point though; what if the tranny started to engage third and didn't release second? It's a stretch I know, but the 700R4 does much different things at WOT than part throttle such as use way more pressure. Also trans mods were done...
