EST on TBI Problem
Hey guys, I need some help...
My car hesitates when I step on the gas... last night it backfired out the intake (flames looked cool but im sure that wasnt good for the engine)
I checked the vacuum lines and all the conections on the tbi... Theyre good...
I serviced the tbi last night thinking that was the problem and nothing... after that i tried setting the timing and I noticed that the timing was set to 2* with the EST wire on and it was still 2* with the EST wire disconected...
How do i fix that? Is the EST module bad? Is this a common problem? I can seem to find an answer on here or on google...

Re: EST on TBI Problem
Just to double check, the EST/BYPASS connector is between the passenger side strut mount and A/C box. Single connector and a tan w/black stripe wire. Exits the fat harness and then goes back in.
When open the SES should turn on and will also set code 42.
If that isn't the connector you opened then someone set the timing wrong.
If that is the connector you opened then either the ECM or the ignition module is bad. The ECM uses the EST/BYPASS line to the ICM to either: spark at the base timing, or allow the ECM to control the timing.
Note that after reconnecting the EST/BYPASS connector need to key-off for at least 10 seconds (4 in reality, but some people count fast).
When code 42 is active the ECM locks out it's own control of the timing until the ECM is reset (by a key-off, wait, key-on cycle).
