Strip car to street car
Strip car to street car
I have a few questions so be patient with me.
I baught a bit of a project. Its an 85 camaro with a 383 stroker, roller rocker heads, bored 30 over, gear to gear timing, built tranny with shift kit.
the guy before me gutted it for the strip. i am trying to turn it into my weekend car to play around in with the wife and kid. I will be removing the roll cage, 4 pt harnesses etc. it has a wooden dash he made with a few after market gauges. no speedo and no fuel gage. I plan on putting a stock dash back into it and using oem gauges. i doubt it still has the stock wiring harness since he gutted it when putting in the new motor. i was wondering how difficult and how i would go about adding all the neccessary components to make factory guages work. also has no a/c and being in florida thats almost a must. will stock ac components work or would i hae to go get all aftermarket components. thank you.

Re: Strip car to street car
If you have windows, all your lights, the drivetrain, drivers seat, clutch/gas/brake pedel/ and shifter. Just get a bucket for the wife and kid. I'm sure they can find something to hold onto.
Anyway. You should be able to buy a new harness, or get one from a junkyard. (depends on the area too)
The AC should bolt right on. But I would caution you need to make sure it fits the accessories you have and the brackets you have.

Depending on the extent of what the previous owner did to the car to make it a strip car, it's probably going to be a lot cheaper to just buy a street car. My car has been gutted and modified so much that it can never be made into a street car again. At least nothing close to a factory produced car.
Re: Strip car to street car
He saved all the seats, so i have those in now, and he had just kinda started the transformation but backed out. so all stock pieces should go back in. and i traded the guy an 88 blazer with some rust i bought for 1600 had almost 150000 miles on the motor with some tranny isues. he had another motor he built and wanted to drop it in it. every thing is still there as in head lights tail lights and all turn signals, so im kind of wondering since all the stock lights are in and work it if maybe the stock harness is still in there? and he said it still has the hook ups for speedo and gass gauge but im not sure. And the salvage yard a few miles away has 3 gird gens so i plan on getting most of my parts, dash head board plastics carpet seat belts center console and all that from there.

You may have a hard time getting a good dash, they crack alot.
The rest you can do alright. Carpet is going to be dependent on the car, door panels, etc...
If you find a car like mine your probably not going to want any interior pieces, unless it's a I need it to drive kinda deal.
But there are some exceptional cars with very clean interiors in junkyards also. Some wrecked, some engine or trans went and sent off for scrap.

I would buy a roller. Just a car with no drivetrain, just wheels, suspension, and interior. Something you could either move all your stuff into, or, in this case, move all the missing stuff into your car.
So see if you can find a thirdgen with a blown engine or no engine or trans somewhere to use for parts. It'll be a LOT cheaper in the long run, and hell everyone can use a parts car sometimes.
