Good starter car?
Good starter car?
Sorry if this is the wrong section didnt quite know where to post.
Looking at buying my first 3rd gen and I have my eye on an 86 iroc 350 with a 5 speed. Thing is it needs a bit of work. I have a little mechanical experience but have a lot to learn.
So what do you think, would a beginner be able to fix the few things wrong with this car?(With the help of this board of course.)

well its cheaper than what i payed for my rs and it seems like its in better condition, i would get it and drive the tires off of it, the carb is an easy fix, transmission...maybe not so much not really sure.

It's not a 350 unless the guy swapped one in. 90% of people selling GM vehicles with small-blocks think it's a 350 and will tell you such, and in many cases they're wrong.
That said, it looks like an alright deal if the body is in decent shape. Look for rust around the rear quarter panels and the floor pans before buying. The transmission will be difficult for a beginner to fix as it requires a complete teardown. The carburettor tuning is pretty easy to accomplish; the hardest part is knowing when you have the right combination.

if you live in an area with emission inspections make sure this car came with a carb.if it came from the factory with fuel injection you won't be able to get it inspected.

We don't have inspections up here in washington. Last time I went thru emissions they stuck a tube up the tail pipe and that was it.
