383 with vortec heads question
can i just put vortec heads on a 383 or do i have to machine anything

The Vortec heads will bolt right onto any Gen 1 SBC (the steam holes for a 400 block would be the only consideration).
The head-to-intake bolt pattern is what's unique for Vortec heads.

They will bolt on to your block, but you will still have the same valve-lift limit (around 0.460") of the Vortec head unless that is corrected, and due to the relatively small CSA of the Vortec intake port you may be a little RPM limited (power wise) on a 383. It's not bad for street driving, but for best track results some careful porting would be in order.
