What goes to this sensor?

I found an unhooked sensor on the plastic air piece, what is it for? I cannot find a loose sensor wire anywhere. Some one told me its for an ambient temperature sensor, but did a 1989 camaro with a stock L98 come with one? I already have a MAF sensor for the air.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

That's the IAT or intake air temp sensor. Not sure where the plug comes from on yours though.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

It's in the wiring diagram. Should be a plug with a tan and a black wire. Might be plugged in to a sensor that's been moved or it would set off the SES light wouldn't it?

From the factory the IAT / MAT sensor was under the plenum between the runners and had a 2 wire plug coming out of the main harness on firewall.
To be fitted where yours is now , PO would have had to make or buy the extension harness to connect to that plug

Re: What goes to this sensor?

If you have the TPI, your IAT sensor is on the bottom of the plenum above the intake manifold to the rear.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

I don't know where the IAT for the TBI IROC is. Probably there in the intake.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

This is probably a newer (91-92) intake that has replaced your original and the sensor was left there to keep the hole plugged. look under your drivers side plenum and you should see the same sensor screwed in under neath with a plug in it.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

I think all TPI had it in plenum but moving the IAT sensor to the plastic air intake is a common trick. It senses cooler air there and provides minimal performance enhancement.

Interesting, that may be a reason why the previous owner may of taken this from another camaro.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

Mystery solved, I found the IAT sensor underneath the front of the plenum. I tried to see if it the wire would reach the plastic intake sensor, but it's too short. Thank you all for the help, now I feel relived.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

All TPIs use a MAT sensor (manifold air temp) in the manifold
V6 and TTA turbo V6 used a IAT (intake air temp) in the intake plastics

the plastic Y pipe you have is a replacement from a V6 car. (not a big deal unless your doing a 100% resto)

Re: What goes to this sensor?

Yup, that's it. I followed the tan and black wire to find it. In the process of finding it,
i found some sort of animal nest under the plenum.

WRONG

That is a identical sensor used for a different purpose.
It is the coolant temperature sensor (CTS )

DO NOT disconnect that sensor
IAT you are looking for is as stated underneath the plenum between the runners

your kidding me, the connectors look almost identical. Now i am going to have to pull apart the nest between the runners.

I found it, it's underneath the bottom of the back of the plenum.

Re: What goes to this sensor?

The connectors ARE identical. The sensor is basically a universal thermal sensor. All its purpose is to read the temperature its screwed into whether its air or water. I use the same sensor x2 with my aftermarket efi for the same purpose.
