Speedometer Question
So I have tired searching the site for a solution to my problem and I have not been able to find the answer, any help would be grealty appreciated. I have a 1988 Firebird that originally had a 5 speed v6, I have swapped in a carbed v8 with a t-5. Currently there is a mechanical vss in the tail shaft of the transmission with no provisions in the cluster (original to the car) for a speedo cable I am wondering if it is as easy as replacing the mechanical vss for an electronic vss? If this is the case does it matter if the electronic vss comes from a v6 or v8 manual transmission? I would really like to be able to use the factory speedometer/cluster if at all possible.

Re: Speedometer Question
Yes it's that easy. The speedometer doesn't care how many cylinders the engine has.

Re: Speedometer Question
To the best of my knowledge the yellow box should still be in it's original location as I don't remember removing it, but I'm uncertain of it's exact location. So I should try to locate an electronic vss, any ideas on the best place to pick/order one?

Thanks for the link and diagram, very helpful information. In the picture of the retrofit vss it shows a connection for a speedo cable and a two wire connector, does that mean it would work either way, mechanical/electronic?

Re: Speedometer Question
stock tpi, tbi and ccc used a vss in the transmission, If you dont have a vss in the transmission and just have a prevision for a cable drive use the retrofit one. The both wire up the same to the buffer. converting a magnetic pulse to optical. just leave the unused leads disconnected on the buffer. ecm input cruse. If you are wanting to convert to just a cable drive 86-86 use cable drive speedometers maybe 87 not positive. The cable driven speedometers had a optical sensor and output to the ecm on the circuit board. sorry about the double post stupid internet fail !!
