Gas tank question
I have what may be a dumb question, but i need to know the correct answer. I bought a new gas tank and the filler neck (filler tube) came seperate. How is it attached? I thought it was welded, but my dad said that he didnt see any "weld marks" where the neck meets the tank on the original tank.
Also, if it is welded, what style of weld should be used?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but i really need to know for sure before they will continue to do any work on the car and i need my car back ASAP. Thanks

Re: Gas tank question
It should be silver soldered, like the old radiators were..
Where did you get one that wasn't all soldered into one piece???
A radiator shop will beable to do it like your factory tank was done. Make sure the neck is in the correct spot.
silver solder can be fixed a lot easier than a welded neck.

Re: Gas tank question
My dad shopped around and found it for me, it was the best price. I think its a spectre, but im not positive. Is that the only way to weld it on?
Re: Gas tank question
I would suspect that the new tank came in two pieces to facilitate easier shipping. As far as I know no 3rd gen tank was ever not a one piece tank. The filler neck was always permanently attached to the tank. This is why it is so darn hard to extract the tank from the car.
My approach to this would be to dry fit the tank and the filler neck to get a rough idea how it fits together on the car, much like you would do for a water plumbing issue. Mark the connection of the tank and the neck. Take it to a reputable mechanic who has some inkling of welding fuel tanks and have him weld the two together.

Re: Gas tank question
The aftermarket offers tanks for 3rd gens with and without filler necks pre-installed. Having owned 3 of these cars myself, I would not want to buy one without the neck; these cars are tricky enough when it comes to gas tank installation and removal, an incorrectly welded neck is another variable I would not want to throw into the mix.
if you must go this route, use the old tank/neck setup as a mock up to get the new parts lined up just right, get things tacked up and do a test fit before a complete weld up and install

Re: Gas tank question
Thanks for all the advice guys. I will relay it to my dad so it can be put to good use.
He said he knows someone that can do it for me, another shop, so we'll be sending it all there tomorrow hopefully. Ill see if they can take the original one too, but my dad said the filler neck got a bit roughed up upon removal, so it may not be 100% correct... Hopefully they are able to figure out exactly how to solder it on!!
