1987 Firebird headlight problem
1987 Firebird headlight problem
We have a very clean, like new, '87 Firebird. It only has 41,000 miles on it. The other night the passenger headlight started to droop. The drivers side wouldn't go down. The next day I got the drivers side down by doing it manually. The passenger side acts like it has no friction to operate it manually but if I mess with it I can get it up. Most of the time it has no resistance & i can do it by hand by just lifting it up. The drivers side still only operates by manually.
Neither motor makes any noise. I have checked the wires with a tester with the wires leading into the motors & at the Headlight Control Modual. I have fire. All the exteral lights work.
What's it sound like guys? Replace the motors? Would both go out at the same time?

Re: 1987 Firebird headlight problem
on the right side, you need to rebuild that motor.
as for the left one going down it maw be your headlight controlle module. or even the headlight switch.
first thing i would do is repair the right motor because it sounds as tho the lil gear inside is stripped.the manual **** should always work on those btw. plug it in and try your lights.
If the right works and the left dont i would say headlight control module.
if both will go up but will not down i would say headlight switch.
the right is stripped i almost positive. these motors will run about 100 a pop
if you plan to junk yard it keep in mind that the motors in your car where used 87-92 only. the Headlight control module you can get from 87-89 only. this is what i have gathered on tgo. i just fixed mine hitting the junk yards.
feiros and sunbirds have the same motors and HCM.
every motor prior to 87 are three wired and have a larger flat ****. keep us updated.

rebuild both motor drives. DON'T waste your time on used.
Topdown solutions is a vendor here and where you should get the kit to rebuild them. Its cheap but takes some time to do. I'm doing a set today.
