After nearly 5 years I found out my 86 has a 5.7 and not a 5.0....

...not from the factory of course, but swapped! Tuesday I tried to do a tune up, spent all day trying to match up the cap and rotor that was on my car with a new one...no luck....UNTIL we looked up a cap and rotor for a TPI Corvette! I had to undo the emissions tube, but sure enough I was able to find the stamp that said 5.7. It was a pita to do, but wow how crazy.

Now I don't know how many miles it has, but it's still running so i won't worry too much.

Is there a stamp code for the 350? What do you have?

the cap and rotor should be the same for a 350 or 305. The 85 and 86 used the large cap distributor, some part store computers try to sell you the small cap (87-92) style for those cars. Vettes always used the large cap distributor with tpi

Yup. And a dizzy could easily be replaced so a cap wouldn't really tell you anything anyways.

Exactly the same happened to me, my 86 TA 305 also turned out to be a 350, swapped by the PO. I thought it was just a carb conversion for the first 3 yrs I owned the car, but when I got the heads off - 4" bores.

I had already bought the gaskets for a 305, but wasn't really complaining

Yes, look down behind the left head, it shows "5.7LG", where 305s have "5.0LG". Note that this doesn't apply to older blocks.
