Knocking sound from 95 Lt1 (video)

Hi

I got a 95 engine that makes a knocking sound.
I can´t hear it at idle but the more i rise the RPM the more it sounds.
You can also feel distinct "vibrations" on the intake when it sounds, but it was hard to say where the sound comes from.
Here´s a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Dlg6lXC8E

Is it a bearing that gone bad or could it be something else?

Were should i start?

//Mattias

does sound like rod or main bearing trouble...could also
check the torque converter/flexplate(if automatic)for
loose bolts, crack in flexplate etc.If the oil filter on the
engine has been in use a while, could cut that open and
look for failed bearing debris-copper or soft metal
shavings or particles. When pan is off, look for any rod
or main bearing caps that are black from heat of spun
bearing.

Have you pulled the valve covers to check the push rods and rocker arms?

I took of the waterpump and saw that the bearing was bad, some of the ***** was missing.
but the engine still makes the knocking sound, the waterpump drive shaft has a pretty large play so I´m taking of the timing cover and will look if the bearing is bad on the opposite side of the waterpump drive shaft.

I found a good picture on http://shbox.com/1/engine_front_diagram.jpg

Re: Knocking sound from 95 Lt1 (video)

Did you try taking off the serpentine belt just to make sure it isn't something stupid like the alternator or power steering pump?

Usually bad bearings do the opposite. They are louder at idle when oil pressure is low and get quieter and sometimes go away at higher RPMs. But I said usually as anything is possible.

One thing you can try to rule out rod bearings is disconnect one injector at a time and if one makes it go away or get quieter then you know that rod bearing is toast.

Are you talking about the drive itself, or the shaft that fits over the top of it. There should be an o-ring on there that takes care of that.

Re: Knocking sound from 95 Lt1 (video)

goose it and as it's coming down to you get the tell-tale knock-knock-knock-knock ? That would be lower end

In the short video you placed, it sounds like an accessory or even WP to me; however, you really only provided a few seconds of the sound.

Took out the engine and checked the bearings.
The third cyl rod bearing are bad and the crank has some heavy wear on it.

That is exactly what my Vortec motor looked like when I took it apart. Looks like you got somewhat lucky and it didn't spin in the rod yet. I was doing my motor on the ultra cheap so I gambled and bought a new crank and put it all together with new cam bearings and rings. I got lucky as the motor runs smooth as can be without getting anything balanced.
