shifter problem (auto) with video

My shifter stopped clicking into each gear yesterday. I tried reversing and I wasn't going anywhere and that's when i noticed this. Also when I put it in park the car rolls backwards and it never did this before. Any ideas?

Re: shifter problem (auto) with video

you have to get underneath. The cable runs from the shiofter to the transmission and my hunch would be the clip at the end of the cable which attaches to the tranny is broken.

You can spring for a new cable or get some copper lashing wire and lash it on, not too tight, not too loose. You'll find out when you hit the sweet spot because it won't go into 1 if you make it too tight.

The clip will still be on the shifter linkage you are just using the wire to ensure it doesn't slip off.

okay thanks guys. I'll bring it to school on Friday so I can use a lift and i'll see what's going on. If the clip is broken can I buy a new one?

Re: shifter problem (auto) with video

mine once came loose at the shifter-inner cable was still
connected, but the plastic outer tubing part came loose
and was moving with the cable.Caused an "unsmooth"
incident when it happened;MAP plug was loose and car
stalled backing up,put back in park for restart and as
soon as car restarted, squealed out in reverse-i got seen
too... Cable came loose when i put in park after the
stall-still in reverse when engine started.Broken plastic
clip was the cause.

Re: shifter problem (auto) with video

if its the tranny end/clip,...in a pinch ive used a few zip-ties to hold the cable on. idk where to get that plastic clip? if you find out let me know. i need one for my 93 camaro. you made me remember i put zip-ties on there about 6 months ago and totally forgot about it. lol. i remember having a hard time locating that clip for some reason.
