Tune up recommendations
I want to get my Z-28 tuned up. Not sure exactly what I'm gonna need because we haven't looked at the plugs and wires yet. But just in case I need the rotor/plugs/ wires, what do you guys suggest?
The Z-28 is a '83 with a 305/ CFI.

Re: Tune up recommendations
Start by looking at the wires. Do they have cylinder numbers on them? If so they are the original wires and long overdue for replacement. A full tune includes cap and rotor, wires, plugs, air and fuel filters, PCV valve.
For parts, use NAPA Echlin cap and rotor, NAPA Belden wires. Not that I have any special love for NAPA but these are among the best quality parts and readily available. For plugs, use only the AC Delco plug originally installed by GM. No other plug will work better and many will adversely affect drivability. Gap the plugs according to the specification printed on the underhood emissions label. Be sure to use the dielectric compound provided with the wires to treat the plug boots.
Clean the throttle body using Throttle Body Cleaner and a clean rag. You may need to use a small bore brush to scrub heavy deposits. Once the TB is clean, use the remainder of the cleaner by spraying it into the throttle with the engine running at about 2,500 rpm.
I hope you run only top tier fuel in the car. By top tier I mean Chevron, 76, or Shell. These fuels contain cleaners that help prevent carbon buildup in the engine and varnish in the injectors. If you don't use top tier fuel, you need to add a quality fuel additive to a full tank at every oil change.

What ASE doc is sujesting is good sound advise but I do a lot of my shopping at Summit Racing = http://www.summitracing.com/?gclid=C...FQ-Chwods0di0g
The only reason I suggest Summit is that it offers the opportunity to do something different/better than stock. Its real easy just put in make, model, year, etc. and you can search through a mass of choices,on any subject. MSD makes great products when it comes to tune ups. There trade mark color is red and I always liked the way a red cap, with red wires looks on my car. I use the AC-Delco R45TS basic copper plugs. They are a exception when it comes to aftermarket because they are a stock replacement.

Re: Tune up recommendations
Thanks Ron. While I do like the looks of the red, I am keeping my Z-28 as stock looking as possible. (Right now the only think non-stock is the radio, and I'm getting that changed soon.)
Priced out the AC-Delco parts for a tune up and the total comes to $110. Not bad.

Re: Tune up recommendations
It is hard to beat AC Delco. I almost suggested AC Delco but I do really like the NAPA Belden wires. They're blue in color so they won't look stock but they are jacketed in a heavy duty silicone that holds up very well over time. AC Delco wires are also very good though. I believe the AC Delco cap and rotor have brass contacts. The NAPA parts do. They are also black like stock so they will not deter from your stock appearance. Brass contacts are superior to aluminum.
I also agree in large part with ronusmc. I run the MSD 8.8 superconductor wires on my extensively modified motor, along with an MSD Digital 6 ignition controller and a Blaster coil. MSD is hard to beat for performance and reliability. Their tune up parts(cap and rotor) are also amazingly inexpensive, considering the quality. But yes, they are red so they will not look stock.
