New 1987 Iroc Z owner and car mechanic wannabee

Hi im new to this forum so im sorry if i posted this in the wrong place or couldnt find the information by looking it up..but im going to be honest, im a complete car noob, im only 17 though and know one in my family knows enough to teach me. Im very eager to learn about everything thats why i bought my first real car a 1987 Iroc z. heres some specs to help you guys understand what were dealing with. to be honest i dont even know what half this stuff is sadly and i wish i did. but here it is:
700R trans
411 gears
350/30 (3000 miles)
490 lift cam
edlbrock victor jr. high rise intake
edlebrock headers into full 3" exaust
holly 650 car
sub frame conectors
iboc drag springs
bear brakes (front)
sniper nos plate w/150 shot nitrous
msd ignition with 6k and 7k rev pins
msd plug wires
aftermarket oil pan
all arp head bolts, intake bolts, etc
forged internals
staggered vette rims
Thats all of it...im sure there is more but i just dont know cause he didnt write it all down. my goal for this car was to fix it up and learn everything i can from it. but as of right now i really want to throw a turbo in it. just a single turbo charger cause the dual costs too much. im not planning on doing this one myself but my question is what kit would work best for the current setup im running, and how can i pay the least amount of money for the turbo and other things i may need? and how much horsepower would i be putting out with a single? Thanks guys, and please dont judge me for my age im a very responsible driver. i wouldnt be racing this up and down the street. i just need some guidence.

Skip the turbo, son. My guess is you'll have plenty to learn with what you've got already. First make sure it's safe, then get it running perfectly, then work on cosmetics, and then you can get into fancier projects.

I do admire your eagerness, however.

What he said...

Learn how stuff works, how to tune it, how to handle what goes wrong, how much it costs when you need brakes and tires and stuff like that, before worrying about "throw a turbo in it". A turbo is FAR FROM a trivial "throw it in" kind of mod.

First thing to do is to make it safe; not only for yourself, but for all the rest of us that are potentially threatened. Next, catch up on overdue maintenance: change ALL the fluids (oil, trans fluid if it isn't PERFECT, rear end grease FOR SURE), lube the chassis grease fittings, do a brake job (might have already been covered in Step 1?), examine every hose in the cooling system and replace all of them that look aged. Next, a tune-up; plugs, cap & rotor, maybe wires if they look like they need it, but DEFINITELY make sure they're not touching the headers anyhwere. Next, exhaust; this might also have been covered in Step 1, since exhaust fumes getting into the cabin are VERY DANGEROUS.

I don't know how much money you have or make or whatever of course, but I'd advise you to NOT spend every penny of it on a car. You've got a whole life ahead of you if you avoid doing anything stupid, save "throw a turbo in it" for later.

It sounds like you have a very nice car, especially for only being 17. But as already said, a turbo isnt something thats just thrown in, and its best to save something like that for last. Take care of any other problems the car may have, make sure it runs perfectly, that its safe to drive in, all that good stuff. But take care of the car, and like mentioned already, make sure you moderate your budget for the car. I was 18 when i bought my first project car (81 Trans Am) and I went a bit overboard and got into a tough spot for a while. So, just a forewarning. And believe me, that thing will eat tires lol but good luck with the project though, and hope you have fun with it!
