Does my 1984 L69 T/A need this (barometric sensor)

After going through the forums and posts I noticed that my T/A is missing this sensor.. a few days ago i saw the unplugged connection to it and spent about 2 hours trying to find where it went with no luck.

Can someone explain to me what the barometric sensor does and If i need it?

If it does any idea on where I can get one?

Auto parts store has them. They look just like a MAP sensor, or in the case of a carbureted car like yours, a VAC sensor. Just no vacuum line gets connected to it.

Dunno what to say about it's importance other than I'm almost certain the ECM will throw a check engine light if it doesn't see one at the end of the wires.

The ECM uses the Baro sensor and Vac sensor readings (comparing them against eachother) to trim the spark advance and fuel curves. Probably not much of a difference unless you're in the eye of a hurricane or on top of a mountain, but it's still an important sensor and the ECM relies on it being there and giving good readings.

Hmm, the check engine light never comes on (and somehow it passed smog with flying colors without it on)..

is there any possible way the prev owner disabled the light?

Turn the key to the ON position and it should liight the CE light for a few seconds. If it doesn't the light isn't working.

It's a manifold pressure differential switch. I don't know if it sets a code.

Thanks Guys, The light does come on.. I've had no luck finding one at an autoparts store near me though.. Checked O'reilys (or however is spelled) autozone and a local mom n pop shop.. none could order it :-/
