Help with roller rockers
Help with roller rockers
I am engine illiterate and so this is a beginning for me. Recently I had some strange noises coming from the top but back of the motor after a spark plug change. The noise really only happened while the RPMs would come back down. Like a rattling noise. Pulled the valve covers off and you can see that the rocker arms are rather beat up....

Problem is, no clue at all, what rocker arm this is or anything else about it. Best info I have is that on the head, each has a number ranging from 1.74-1.76

What's a good ratio to go with for rocker arms?
The most information I have about this motor is that it's a 383. I know nothing about the heads, cam, all internals. I start it up, it starts up, I shut it off, it... Kinda shuts off... It goes vroom and I smile. Simple as that.
Anyone have any ideas what rollover rockers I could go with, what ratio? Clueless here....

Re: Help with roller rockers
SBC rockers use a 1.5 ratio. Some people use a 1.6 ratio to get a little more lift without having to do a cam swap. Increasing the ratio moves the pushrod closer to the pedestal. The pushrod hole sometimes needs to be slotted to relocate the pushrod. It's unlikely a 1.7 rocker will work properly on a SBC head. If someone tried using BBC rockers on a SBC to get more lift, they should be slapped.
What were they rubbing on? Looks like the wheel wasn't making proper contact with the valve stem and the rocker was rubbing on the retainer. Also looks like they're self aligning rockers and you probably need non self aligning.
Throw that set out and buy a new set. 1.5 rockers are fine and will give you the least amount of installation problems.

Thank you.
I know little about this motor, it was built then passed around town pretty much, was told it has a big cam, would 1.6 be better?
I'm guessing the rockers in my picture are one similar to ones I found on eBay called proform and the only one from that brand is in 1.7... But this is simply judging by holding my rocket arm up at the same angle the eBay photo was taken.
