You're not stupid for asking man. Just use a wrench or socket to release the pressure while installing the new belt.

Thanks man- but What exactly am i loosening to take the tension off. Theres that whole mechanism with the spring inside and when i take the bolt out of the middle the thing just comes on and off. Then theres the smaller wheel attached to that. The one with no grooves in it.

Yeah, the smaller wheel is what you use to release the pressure off the belt. Use a 14 or 15 mm socket or wrench (don't remember exactly).

Re: SERPENTINE BELT REINSTALATION HELP.
Just wanted to bring this full circle an post a definate solution. Fyi. This is on an 88 305 tpi motor. Not sure if others are the same. What i needed to use was a box end wrench. ( thats the part of the wrence that the socket goes on. That box end fits in to a groove (thats square shaped) on the tensioner wheel mount. This is visible from the front right above the small tensioner wheel that doesnt have grooves on it. This simply needs to be rotated with the box end wrence or breaker bar in it and its such a piece of cake. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks for all the help guys! Happy building. I will be posting pics of my 305 turbo build in the power adders section by the end of the week!!! Camaros rock!!!
