gas tank issues

I have a 87 trans am t-tops. The gas tank is one whole peice. I can safely put a hundred miles on it before i need to get gas. It will normally take 10 to 15 dollars and then i can hand sqeeze in another 10 or so dollars worth of gas. The gas gauge only reads full when it has sat for awhile and by that i mean during the winter when i park it. Im trying to figure out why it will only take so little bit of gas before i have to hand squeeze it in. theres a white vent thing that ive tried to find a new one to replace it and have had no luck. If there is any help you guys out there could give me that would be much appreciated on either the gas gauge problem or the filling problem.

Re: gas tank issues

Just to get this right, you can put the gas pump on full for about $15 then it'll auto-shut off, but if you hold the gas pump about half way your able to get roughly $10 more in the tank

Are you 100% positive its the original tank?

No im not sure if its the original gas tank. Out of all of the third gens I have owned I have never had one that had a one piece gas tank.

Re: gas tank issues

My original was i think, but i dont remember. The new one (spectre) isnt. I still have a similar problem though, but ive found that if i lift up the filler neck a little im ok.

Did it always do that?

Have you been able to actually check out the tank? Do you see anything that looks wrong?

The reason i ask is because it may not be the original tank, there was a guy on here who took it somewhere to have the tank fixed and they put a 4TH GEN tank in his car! May not be your problem, but thought id throw it out there.

Re: gas tank issues

It has always done this since I have had the car. I replaced the fuel pump just over a year ago and I didnt see anything with the tank. I have also tried lifting the neck while filling up and that doesnt help either.

Re: gas tank issues

If it isn't leaking, then I wouldn't worry about this at all. Gas it up and drive.
