Problem with steering pump and pulley (serpentine)
Hi,
Car has a 350ci TBI Chevy engine with 1992 standard setup (a/c, smog pump and SERPENTINE)
Got myself a new steeing pump remanufactured by Borgeson SUMMIT Ref BRG-800310.
But I overlooked at the fact that the OEM one had a pressed in pulley.
Borgeson did not offer one and the application seemed to be matching with my car so I made a mistake: This pump has a keyed pulley fitting.
Also the return line does not have the same orientation on the oil tank but this is less irritating cause I can use a longer hose.
No problem ! (I said) and I bought a nice Aluminum pulley designed for keyed shafts ... No data about size are provided even from the manufacturer so again I took the chance.
The OEM pump and pressed in pulley on the car

Same on a different vue showing that there are 36 millimeters between the back of the pulley and the oil tank (+ detail on OEM return line going up)

The new pump with keyed shaft. Tank return line is going down.

New pulley put in place here the distance is 30 mm (pulley will be 6 mm too close to the engine mounting bracket)

Other possibility ... 75 mm !!!! (Pulley will almost hit the cooling fan)

I am stuck here. What can I do ???

I am feeling your pain, wish I could help you out. Could you send your pump in for a rebuild?

hell no ...
shipping prices from My country to the US are so exagerated that it would cost 100 USD to ship my pump back !!
That is why I can only find a solution on the pulley installation or buy anothe rpump but Borgeson do not make one for our engine...

Completely wrong pump for your car. That one was used from '67 through '79 (check the applications on Summit for that pump).
You will also find that the outlet fitting is for a double flare, not a Saginaw. Although it can be replaced with the one in your current pump.
RBob.

I just looked on Rock Auto, can get a rebuilt pump for not many $$$'s (Euros?). There is also a 5% discount code on the top of the vender review board here on TGO.

Re: Problem with steering pump and pulley (serpentine)
What RBob said. Wrong pump. You need a smooth shaft, no nut on the end and designed to work with metric (double flare + o-ring) lines. What you got now won't work so don't try to make it. You're in for a world of hurt if you do.

Well I surely missed the keyed shaft but I must say I had too much confidence because I know most GM parts are used on many models with no to little mod - then I thought Saginaw was a Saginaw and was the same on most cars.
In fact Summit says IT IS a saginaw (whatever it realy means
- now wondering ... too late !)
I made a mistake for sure, I admit that. now I have to find a solution - or pay for my mistake ...
I can re-use the OEM tank, the inlet but the shaft is a problem.
Is it not possible to change the shaft with my old one ?? just a thought ...

In fact I also bought a Borgeson steering gear Delphi 600 (Ref 800209) and that is why I wanted to get an improved rebuilt from Borgeson.
Now, Summit also propose an AGR rebuild (without tank) but with pressed-in pulley and valid for my car.
Ref is AGR-807324
QUESTION: For 150 USD is it worth it? Vs an ACdelco rebuild

Yes , you did make a mistake ..... No Biggie , they happen ....
Now , before ya go and compound the mistake with the complete destruction of this pump you bought , Think about this ....
Even if you were to be able to change the shaft , and where would this good donor shaft come from ? The Old one ? (It's probablly just as worn as the rest of the pump you need to replace) , you would end up with a "Frankenpump" that still had fittings for the old style lines . Especially , of course , it's the pressure line that the fitting is different on , and even on down to the rest of the pump's threaded hardware being SAE instead of the Metric that our cars use .
Conclusion = sell that pump on the classifieds , and buy a pump that fits your car .
PS , I realize your in Europe , and I do feel bad for the $$$ that shipping is gonna cost , but in this case seems the only best way out ....

Re: Problem with steering pump and pulley (serpentine)
Ok it could be easier to sell that pump ... or keep it until I buy an older GM again
I have to say that the pump on the car today is already a rebuild from rockauto.
Don't remember the brand but it was delivered with an axial play to the shaft.
I find this is not really acceptable.
So I did not want to buy a bad rebuild again ...
This is why I initially planned to buy an AGR rebuild (for the big price one would expect this is good rebuild !!!) and finally moved onto borgeson cause I did not hear much about the AGR and borgeson are quite good. (except they do not make one for my car !)
So what about the AGR part ???
