I’m having a problem with my 89 RS Camaro. When I try to start the car when its cold it cranks over for a good 4 seconds and it drives great. Say I go across town and go into a store for 30 min, come back out, it starts almost instantly when turning the key. the problem is when I put it into reverse or drive, it just dies. Start it again does the same stuff. It's not blowing a code so I’m stumped. I’ve been working on it for awhile changing parts and a tune up. Can anyone help PLEASE!! haha

I bought the car from a buddy and it used to have a 6 cyl. but was swapped to a 305 5.0 L

is the p/n switch hooked up to the ecm ?

 

Whats the p/n? I'm not all that great yet with cars ha sorry

 

pin b10 of the ecm if this is a tbi has a orange and black stripe wire this goes to the park /neutral switch. when the park neutral switch grounds the orange and black stripe wire the rpm of the engine is increased in park and neutral. This rpm adder helps the the transition from park to drive or reverse.

 

Thats located next to the shifter under the dash right? What do you recomend to fix it? Cut the wire and run a new wire or what? It is tbi, automatic by the way.

 

Just a thought It was this not 100 % positive this is issue. does the rpm of the engine go up in neutral or park? if not you may need to see if the wire is connected to the ecm and goes to the park switch. The switch is under the center console, the ecm is under the dash on the passenger side.

 

Its usually at 900 or 1000 rpm in park and neutral first starting up but then once its warm its about 800 to 750 rpm.

 

So when engine is cold you can put it in gear and drive, when engine is warm you cant, ok so when engine is cold and you put it into gear, does the car want to take off instantly? Like you have to hold the brake alot harder?

 

 

my car does this same thing but I raised the Min Air Control through the TBI until I can fix it, I believe it's a vacuum leak.

Car idles high while cold, takes off fast without pressing gas, then after warm it idles low...

 

A bad transmission(torque converter, pump) would cause same driving issue.

 

It's random, sometimes it does it cold and sometimes it does it at normal operating temp...

 

how do i ck to see if injector is restricted ?

When cold it cranks bout 6sec like its not getting fuel~then at random when engaging transmission eng will die if i don't give it gas. Drives out fine and pulls good when i get in it.
when motor is warm starts up with out all that cranking. I changed idle control valve and fuel filter.

 

Have you checked your fuel pressure?

 

I fiddled with timing again... it's a pain but a little more and my car shifts a lot better, takes off better runs better don't stall.. but I can tell it's still off a little.. it should smoke tires but I'm close.... I need to get more time to get it right...

 

I haven't got 150 bucks to borrow a pressure gauge at auto zone but I did look too into it. I changed the fuel filter but I'm thinking it could either be the fuel pump, injectors or the fuel pressure regulator in the tbi.
