Lots of pressure in fuel tank
Everytime when I go to put gas in my car there always seems to be a huge amount of pressure release once I crack open the gas cap.
Also after driving, I hear the fuel tank pop after it sits a few minutes. All of this normal?

Re: Lots of pressure in fuel tank
Not the cap, the whole tank. The metal is flexing from the pressure. Some pressure is good. That much is usually not so good. I've heard stories of tanks cracking from too much pressure. Check your charcoal canister and solenoid 1st, they are responsible for venting excessive gasses and pressure from the tank. I've never checked it myself but the solenoid failing is common. Search for how to check it. Ill see if I can find a link as well. Also try and pick up a vented gas cap. I've heard mixed review about how effective they are though, so just try it out and see

Just curious. Do you still have the smog and emissions equipment installed on the vehicle. If not, check the ventilation hose that comes off the fuel lines on the passenger front frame rail and make sure the hose is not plugged or the charcol canister is not plugged.

Already replaced the cap and that didnt do anything. Can't honestly remember if it was a vented one. Don't think it is.
And there is no smog equipment on it anymore.

Hoses seems to look normal. How can I check the canister?

Re: Lots of pressure in fuel tank
Does your car ever make a mooing or groaning noise after shutting it off? There is a pressure release valve that runs from the sending unit down just near the rear end on the drivers side. It will be a line dangling with a filter-looking thing on it. That is the pressure release valve. When they go bad they cause all of your symptoms, including the noise for some. If all else fails replace that. They're a dealership only part but you can just replace it with a fuel filter if need be.

I occasionally smell fuel too while driving. But not for quite awhile after i changed my fuel cap.
Gas mileage also kinda sucks

Re: Lots of pressure in fuel tank
If the canister is gone, the line that ran to it from the tank is laying there on the driver's side of the radiator somewhere. Some people cap this line. I prefer to place a length of hose on it and attach it somewhere so that it doesn't pick up water or dirt. This way it acts as a vent. It's a small 1/4" steel line and runs up from the tank along with the fuel lines.
