Converting power steering to v-belt with March

I have searched through a million bracket pictures and threads. I have a 400sbc in my 92 camaro. Long water pump. All I wanna do is put a v-belt pulley on my pump and get the right bracket.

I didnt really want to spend this much money, but if this bracket will work. I'll go for it.

Also March sells multiple press fit v-belt pulleys. Im not sure which one I need.

Go to the junk yard, and pull a water pump pulley for $10.00 off of an 82-85 Carmaro or Firebird. Just make sure you're not using an 87 and later water pump as these are "reverse rotation" and are designed to work with serpentine set ups. You can probably grab the whole set up for uver $50.00 though, I switched to a serpentine set up from a V-belt and highly recommend staying with a serpentine. Your bracketrs from the 92 should bolt right on.

I wasnt very clear in my original post. Sorry about that. Im converting the power steering to v-belt. My water pump and alternator are already v-belt.

Ok, so what you need to do is get an early 80's power steering pump, same years I mentioned earlier. Main reason is because I don't know for sure if the serpentine power steering pumps spin the same direction as the V-belt versions.

Dang, I never thought about that. I just bought a brand new power steering pump too.

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

I'll add that when I switcehd my 84 from V-belt to serpentine, I had to change the power steering pump to an 88 style, so to use a V-belt, I'd suggest going back to an earlier year model.

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

PS pumps all spin the same way.

It's REAL EEEEEEEEZIE to tell which way accessories go: if the belt goes over it the normal way, with the inside (ribs) of the belt on the pulley, it turns clockwise (normal); if the back of the belt (smooth side) goes over the pulley, it turns CCW (backwards).

AFAIK the only thing that turns backwards, besides the idler & tensioner, is the WP.

Not sure whether the serp brackets hold the pump the same distance front-to-rear as the V-belt ones; but if so, you can just swap pulleys, if you find one for the V-belt system that matches your pump's shaft (either the press-fit kind or the one with a key)

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

The v-belt and serpentine belt pulleys interchange on pumps from the late 70s on up. They're both press-fit with no keyway and no nut to retain the pulley. Around 1980 GM changed from SAE to metric fittings on the hoses (38* single flare to o-ring plus double flare) but that doesn't matter to you since you're reusing the same pump with the same hoses- just a pulley change.

Now as for the bracketry..... I have no idea if the serpentine brackets would put the pump at the right distance to work in a v-belt setup.

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

if you want to go with v belts for some silly reason, i'd suggest finding a 70-75 pickup in the junkyard and getting EVERYTHING off the front of the motor- water pump, pulleys, brackets, accessories- and putting it all on your car. i like those years because they use a simple PS pump bracket that hangs off the side of the water pump and only has one bracket on the exhaust manifold instead of a bunch of useless brackets with impossible to reach bolts that you need to loosen to tighten the belt, and then try to get tight again while holding tension on the belt. it's a clean and simple setup that will fit better than any after market setup will, and it has the benefit of oem engineering and durability testing behind it..

really, tho, in my old age i've come to love the simplicity of a factory serpentine setup.

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

Thanks for the help guys. I dont have any of the factory brackets for my car. They went away years ago. I have a 13.1 compression 410ci sbc in my car now. The car has been stripped and setup for the drag strip. Will an old factory GM bracket from the 70's work with headers?

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

With the Vbelts? Yes, it will without any issues. I had headers on my 84 before I switched to Serpentine and it fit no problem. Pretty sure that they're the same brackets used in the 70's.

Re: Converting power steering to v-belt with March

Those brackets will work with the headers; but possibly not with the rest of the car.

Specifically, in alot of the older cars, the PS pump was mounted down lower than in these, and it will hit the steering gear in this chassis.

Best thing to do is watch the classifieds for a V8 setup out of one of these cars, any of them, from 87-back.
