vats?

Every once in awhile, about once a month, maybe more often, my 92 camaro rs will not crank. Its as if the battery is dead, but give it a couple hours, and it cranks and turns over as if nothing is wrong? I thought it may be the vats since the car has been worked on everything else! Any way to bypass that bs? Or anyone else have same issue?

More info needed
It cranks over slowly like flat battery or it doesn't crank at all

Re: vats?

Doesn't crank at all, lites and all battery functions are just fine. Aftr doing some research here, am 99.9999 % sure its the vats and have seen info on bypassing it, just seems complicated with having to chk the ohms and getting something frm radio shack to splice to? Wish there was something easier!

have you got a spare key to try?
have you tried cleaning the resistor pellet on the key and the contacts that read it inside the lock barrel?

Whats complicated?
You measure your key resistance , get $1 worth of resistors and connect the resistors to the plug under the steering column

Could always get a new key cut but that won't solve your problem if the lock contacts are worn out

Re: vats?

This is actually the easiest fix ive done to my car, well not fix but bypass. My car started out like your describing, not starting a few times a week and having to wait for the vats to reset before it'd start. Finally it quit reading the key completely which will leave you stranded at the worst possible time. I checked the keys resistance with a multimeter. Theres a chart under the tech write ups i believe which has all the keys resistances and their ranges. I compared my reading off my key to that to figure out a good resistor somewhere in the middle of the range for my key. i then went to radioshack and got a pack of 5 resistors for about $1.50. I didnt splice anything, the wires at the base of the steering column have a connection that i unhooked and just stuck my resistor in there wrapping it in electrical tape. It started right up and hasnt had any issues since then. Be aware though that this does make your car easier to steal but if your gonna have the car parked for a while you could always pull out the resistor and really **** off any thief trying to jack your car. Hope this helps some.
