Idle drop and die!!!
Idle drop and die!!!
Ok, so I have seen this discussion thread on here a few times......BUT I NEED HELP!!!
Here we go:
1991 Z28, 305, 700r4.......here is the mods been done to motor........Comp Cam 268 duration 479 lift cam, new 1.6 roller tip rockers, Headman Shorty Headers, NO CAT, shift kit, TPIchips.com performance chip been added. Rear diff is a 3.23 posi.
Here is what is goin on......According to TPIchips.com I needed to set my timing at factory (0), and set idle there. Car wont start to idle (in Park) until after about 10-15 seconds of feathering, then will idle about 1100-1200rpm. Put in gear and then drive (anywhere) and then come to a stop the idle will drop down and stall out (DIE).
Now, I have seen several different versions of how to set base idle and tried a few.....ALL FAIL TO WORK.
The latest was from my tranny guy, who said to disconnect batter, reconnect, start then put in gear, hold brake and run until cooling fan comes on. (This didnt work worth a **** either)
SOOO now where!!

Re: Idle drop and die!!!
Tpi cars the timing is 6 degree and the tbi cars are 0 degrees
Re: Idle drop and die!!!
yeah, I got that originally before having TPIchips build a chip for it.....They required it be set at 0. Not to mention before we set it at zero the mechanic who put on my mods for me had to set it at +5 degrees just to get it to run. Now will run with chip and on 0, but wont idle right at all.
On another note I just decided to check my IAC........It looks like crap..black as night, and some greasy sludgy build up all over the spring and valve.
Going to buy a new one tomorrow and see if this has been the root of my headaches.

Re: Idle drop and die!!!
Well just found out today what solves my who issue. After replacing an ECM then the O2 sensor, my car decided to finally run in a closed loop. Still idled like crap and smelled like it was dumping fuel out my exhaust........So got me a call to TPI Chips....SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!! My ECM reading only getting 57 Metric KPA vacuum to the MAP sensor and a BLM of 108 (which was real low). This is causing the car to dump fuel at all the wrong times!! So off goes my new custom tuned chip back to the tuner to be re-tuned and tweaked to run this machine like a champ.
