I replaced my tank about four years ago. I was under the impression that the Spectra tank was smaller than the original and this sure seemed to be true. I never managed to put more than about 14-15 gallons into the new tank. Today I went to a gas station that I have been using for 19 years and put 17 gallons of gas in my car and it wasn't completely on E. I also could have put more in since I didn't let it kick it off a couple of times like I usually do when topping it off. I was already looking for a leak at this point, but none was found. Anybody think this possible or should I throw another fit with them?

 

Take a gas can of known capacity to that very same pump , and see if maybe the pump may be off it's calibration ?

I can't see any other way you would get 17+ gallons into a 15 gallon tank .

Without having a giant puddle underneath afterwards , that is .......

 

Yeah, that's what I should have done, but instead I went off on them and told them I was not happy about it. From what I've read about this kind of thing, ripoff stations have a switch that will make the pump correct if they want. So they will make sure to never rip me off again. Oddly, I feel that I was shorted almost exactly 10% of the gas for which I paid.

 

You could be right that it's a delibrate cheat , or it could be a pump malfunction . That's why I was thinking to bring in a 2 gallon gas can and see if it actually fills at 2 gallons . If it takes 2 and more , like 2.3 gal to fill , maybe even the station hasn't caught on to the pump's malfunction . If it fills at exactly 2 , then yea , I'd be suspicious also

I'd hate like hell to see it be dishonesty on their part , but either way I'd be keepin a good close eye on future gas purchases there ...
