Knock sensor questions

Well when I swapped over to my old motor recently I opted not to install a knock sensor since I've read that my timing gear setup would probably upset it and it would retard the timing. Well I realized that I need one to fine tune my timing so I installed one. I put my auto prom on the ALDL after installing it and it doesn't seem to be picking up my timing gears as knock. So I decided to try and make the car knock to test if it was working. I tried leaning it out and that didn't work. So I gave it rediculous timing at idle and it didn't pick up knock until I killed the motor. My questions are is it picking up the knock only once the motor was being turned off unusual? Also what's an easy way to make the motor knock so I can test the sensor?

By default. on start up the ECM advances the Ign to generate a knock so it can confirm the KC is operational , does that show on your data log?
If it doesn't see the KC present , the ECM locks out timing above 1500 rpm

No load @ idle so hard to generate knock , you need to drive up a hill in top gear or similar to load the engine up

Re: Knock sensor questions

Thanks for the response, I'll check my log and look for for the one on startup.
