87 Firebird Questions,Need help!

Hello I have a 87 firebird 305 with a quadrajet carb and everything else is stock. This is my first hotrod lol, I traded a Acura legend for the bird and so far love it! But the car has sat for some time it only has 112xxx miles no rebuilds at all. Runs okay after I did a tune up and cleaned carb. But I still think i could do some more work to make it better. Heard of rags over the carb and letting it suck all the junk out of the intake and engine but i have no clue how to do that? Recently got the car running well idles really weird sometimes, and recently noticed when i put the car in gear it dies, what is wrong? Needs new exhaust manifold gaskets really bad could that be the problem? Some *** Broke my windshield with a skateboard and also the driver window so my money is going into that but i plan on putting 350 heads and doing some work to the engine, intake, carb and transmission. any ideas? Love this car and hate to see how she was treated so i am giving her the best of the best. I would love any help or questions on this car i need anything i can get at the moment. Thanks!

Don't install 350 heads on a 305, you'll loose compression (bigger chambers).
Is the car still equiped w/ the electronic feed back carb? If so, any check engine light? You might need a carb. rebuild, those feed back carbs have a sensor & solenoid in them, so you need to know if theres any issuses w/ those before the rebuild.
Some guys get rid of the ecm & feed back carb, you could do that if there is no emissions testing in your area.

The best bolt on head is probably the s/r torquer 305s made by world products. A budget head that'll require a matching intake is the vortech head for a 305.
Look at your carb, is there any electrical connections on the carb itself? If so then its a feed back carb.

I just looked, yeah it does have electrical lines running to it. What are the normal things that go bad on those type of carbs?
