l2304 .100 pistons on vortec heads
l2304 .100 pistons on vortec heads
I have a set of vortec heads ready for high lift camshaft (springs, retainer to valve guide clearance ect.), I have a set of new trw pistons with .100 domes L2304, the block is not deck and the heads mill them a lit a bit just to clean them, some people says that the piston will hit the dome in the spark plug boss or because the heart shape of the head they will not fit, I know it will be better to use flat tops and that 10.5 to 1 is too much for the street but the car is not a daily driver and I don't care to use high octane since I will not use the car much or lower the timing a lit a bit in order to use 93 octane, now the question is will the plugs fit my vortec cylinder head if not what modification do I have to do, cut the spark plug boss a lit a bit or the dome of the piston, please help, a lot of people says a lot of things but haven't find a person that actually have use the combination and know for a fact that it will work, I'm thinking of using a camshaft of .525 of lift witch is not that big and don't think will hit, my big concern is the dome and the spark plug boss please help.

Only way to be absolutely sure would be to bolt up and torque down the heads with some model clay on top
of the piston see what ( if any ) clearance you have when you turn the engine over by hand

First of all did we forget all the posts that compression ratios dictate cam choices??. Then once a cam choice is make it dictates the intake runner size. Those heads DO NOT belong on .100 domes. And you can back down the timing until cows don't milk anymore and it will not run on 93 gas. Your math on the SCR being 10.1 is just plain wrong.
Sooooo you fly-cut the domes to fit the heads and then stand back looking at them wondering what was the sense in buying them in the first place??. If you going to use a good TRW .100 dome, you need to have a good aftermarket head that's going to preform to compliment the domes. If then you need to fly-cut the domes for valve clearance that is something entirely different. You got this bass backwards.
Another question is those domes are mounted on which rods??.
We could get into a number of other questions, but it does work the other way around about fitting a cam to the compression ratio where too small of a cam for a high compression ratio engine is a really bad move.

Thank's for all the help, I cut the piston dome converting them in flat tops, it only cost me 40 bucks and finish with the problem, maybe you may ask why I bother to do that, is because I bought a set of speed pro hyper flat top pistons (I've used them before 10 years ago in an 350 I had and had good results) and found out that now they are made in india, they are a piece of crab,I was mad they came out broken and they refund my money so I found an old company here where I live that went out of business and sold me the trw l2304f out of and new old stock, USA made strong beautiful pistons and I was going to use them no mere what, so I did, any way thank's for the help.

i have to chuckle reading all these " expert" opinions on trw l2304 pistons not working with vortec heads . until u have built an engine with this combo dont give out false info . i have an engine with trw l2304 pistons and vortec heads and it runs great on pump gas
