92 firebird 3.1L ??? help

Here goes. Car is ran great since we bought it. About a week a ago it went dead twice while pulling into the yard about to stop. Seemed odd but started right back up. Then no start. Fuel pump relay would cycle on but couldnt hear pump run. Replaced fuel pump and filter. Turns injectors were not firing. When they would fire car would start run great, idle about 5 to 10 min then car shut off, no injector fire again. Checked all wires at harness running to injectors thought it had a short, seemed to start after moving intake wires. Car had great fire at coil and plugs. I replaced pickup coil and ignition module last night after learning module sending ecm signal to fire injectors, put car back in time like didtributor came out and now no start. Acts just like it is out of time?? Fires off and on at plugs, infectors priming every time. Dropped ECM and tap tested, also checked wires from ecm to distributor, making connection fine. ???? ECM bad..........?? please help if u have any ideas. wasting $$$$ and car still won't run.

Re: 92 firebird 3.1L ??? help

fuel pressure 46 to 44 steady, injector noid shows injectors are firing, compression around 130 to 150 except #5 cyl is on 90 to 100, coil has blue fire, plug wires blue fire, plugs firing white spark? , motor in time firing on tdc #1 at timing mark. I think injectors are now flooding engine soaking plugs. At prime I smell gas under the hood, what could cause this?

Re: 92 firebird 3.1L ??? help

update, Car will crank. Timing set with light to 10 degrees BTDC with tan and blk wire unhooked. Shut off and then hooked back up and started. It ran a short time, maybe 5 min died. Then would crank about 5 seconds and die. Will only crank and stay running if I unhook tan and blk wire to ecm timing control. But even then went I open throttle slightly begins misfiring very bad with the wire unhooked. Coil tested good with muti-meter and hot wire to coil retains 12 volts when the fire stops and kills engine. I'm sure it kills fire because I can watch timing light go out as it stalls, and when fire breaks down as I open throttle. I am narrowing it down. Any ideas. Oh yea, just installed plugs, wires, cap, and rotor button. Has new fuel pump, distributor module "had new one tested also", pick up coil.

Re: 92 firebird 3.1L ??? help

It is interesting that the engine will continue running with the tan/blk EST wire disconnected. This wire carries the 5v signal from the ECM that puts the ICM in EST mode once the ECM sees 400rpm from the crank reference circuit. It may be that your ECM is faulty. I would say look at the ICM but you say you just replaced it. It is difficult to test the EST circuitry without a lab scope. But, you can complete the A & C tests for no spark no start. The purple /white wire carries the crank reference signal to the ECM from the ICM. It is a 5 volt square(digital) wave. The ECM sends the EST signal back to the ICM on the white wire. You can verify which side is having an issue by watching the signal on both wires. If the ppl/wht wire is dropping signal, the ICM is at fault. If the wht wire loses its signal even though the ppl/wht wire signal is fine, the ECM is probably at fault. The C tests have you verify good circuits between the ICM and ECM as well. Of course, be sure that the pink or red batt+ wire the to dist has power whenever the key is on. I don't have a way to post the A & C test for you but they will be in any decent shop manual for you car or online at Mitchell on demand or All data. Most libraries have these websites available to the public.

Re: 92 firebird 3.1L ??? help

When I opened up the gap around magnet poles the misfire while opening throttle stopped. Now just won't run while est wire is plugged in. I am sure it is the ecm or distributor magnetic field around the pickup coil at fault. I am working on finding a subst. ecm to plug up and test without spending $100 on one. ecm $100, new distributor $130??

Distributor failures are common. I can't say exactly whether your trouble is ECM or distributor without testing, but the OE dizzys are such a huge failure item, I would replace that if there is even a question. Also, as I was just reminded, before replacing the ECM, verify good power and ground.
