What a good oil Viscosity for Winter/Colder Temps....

So I live in SoCal and the weather down here isn't as bad as other states but I was just wondering if changing my oil viscosity to something other than what I have always been using will help my car out for those cold morning starts...?thanks Im using Valvolines 5W-30

Re: What a good oil Viscosity for Winter/Colder Temps....

The first number (5W) indicates the cold viscosity of the oil. It behaves like 5W oil when cold, but 30W when hot.

That is NOT to say that the oil is thinner when cold than when it's hot. It's just not as thick as straight 30W would be at the same cold temp.

Long story short, keep using what you're using.

Just keep using what you are. Once the motor heats up, it doesn't matter what the temp outside is.

Agreed; that's an all-around workhorse oil grade. Keep using it.
