Help rebuilding stock 305 LG4 camaro

Hi there,
I owned a 1987 camaro with stock 305 LG4 engine, TH700 and stock carb. After a radiator problem I need to change head gaskets, and I've put off completely the engine. I remove everything (pistons, rings, pumps..) and now I want to give my engine a new life. May someone help me? The mechanic told me to rebuild it changing pistons, rings, gaskets and doing a little "cleaning" to the heads (if they need).
I found this kit on summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fem-csmhp749-000, but my friend owned a '67 vette told me to change only gaskets and rings, because changing pistons is not safe for street use.
What to do now?
please help me, I want to use again my great car!

Re: Help rebuilding stock 305 LG4 camaro

looks like a good complete kit if you are reusing your cam and crank. I am having a rebuild done on the 350 for my car right now and we are not changing the pistons only because we don't need to. there is nothing wrong with having new pistons that are stock size, even when you bore the cylinder and go to a larger piston i have not heard about any unsafe for the street issues as long as you build it correctly (don't make the cylinder wall too thin or stroke the engine without having proper clearance)

i don't see any problem using everything in this kit for a stock type rebuild
