Any ideas what this is???

I have included a picture of the engine(5.7L/350) from my 1991 Camaro Z28. I was wondering if anyone know what the black box is by the A/C unit; behind the alternator. This is on the passenger side.

There is one hose that is not connected to anything, but if I put my thumb over the hose, it will cause the engine to die.

I just purchased this car a few weeks ago, so I am still trying to learn about it. Any ideas what I should be researching to find out how this should be hooked to the engine????

Many thanks!!!
