Distributor Dizzy Rotor to Shaft Play?

I am curious if anyone else's rotor has play between the rotor and the shaft. Not to be confused with play in the gear to cam, when i turn my rotor it moves about 1/4" before the shaft begins to rotate. I dont notice any problems really but I think this could be a problem having slop in the rotor and could cause the timing to be a couple degrees off. I know there is a spec for up and down play, I havent measured the up and down play but I believe its within 25 thousands.

Anyone else notice play in their rotor to shaft? It doesnt look like the plastic on the rotor is worn or the shaft is worn so i was thinkin about using some epoxy on the slot of the rotor and letting it dry and trim it to a tight fit before i install it so it fits without movement.

I've seen it, not as bad though. Have you tried a good quality rotor?

Re: Distributor Dizzy Rotor to Shaft Play?

I just bought this distributor used but it is all gm parts in it. i remember my old one having play but it was harder to turn it side to side since it was a new rotor. maybe they fit tight untill they are removed several times. I think ill just get a new rotor and try it.

Also make sure its going down far enough to fully engage the slot in the shaft. I've had that happen if they are not fully engaged. It should have almost no radial play.

Re: Distributor Dizzy Rotor to Shaft Play?

Thats what i thought since a 1/4" im guessing is probably 5 degrees or so and would make for some weird drivability concerns. I push it all the way down and the same amount of play, must just be worn from taking it off since I dont see this wearing on the vehicle it shouldnt ever move. Im also wondering if I should drill some holes at the rotor level between the terminals on the cap to keep the air from becoming electrically charged and crossfiring like MSD reccomends doing on the small cap distributors in thier instructions for the 6a box.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Distributor Dizzy Rotor to Shaft Play?

Doesn't make the least bit of difference. No effect on driveability.

All the rotor is, is a switch, to send the spark to the correct plug at any given moment, and not any other. As long as it does that it's fine.
