Fuel Tank

My dad bought a 92 Z28 and the fuel pump went bad. We dropped the fuel tank out and the filler neck is leaking. The plastic baffles inside the tank and cracked and in pieces too. Should we fix this tank or buy a replacement?

I've read all the horror stories about spectra tanks, wondering if all the aftermarket tanks are made by spectra? Hoping there is another aftermarket option available.

The sending unit lines are also corroded and need replaced. Which company sells the best reproduction sending unit?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Fuel Tank

I purchased a Spectra tank about a year ago. Painted it with por-15 and just recently had it installed at the shop. They said it went in no with no problems at all. Neither me nor the shop did any bending or modification to it. I also gave them brand new tank straps and and squeak rubber strips.

If you get a new tank, I HIGHLY suggest that you buy por-15 with some paint brushes and paint the whole tank, top and bottom. Also, you see all those rubber fuel hoses back there? Replace them. All of them. Seriously. You'll likely regret it one day if you don't.

Re: Fuel Tank

When I replaced my fuel pump on my 92 the neck was leaking when I got it so me and my dad welded the neck back. Sadly it is very very thin metal around the neck so it will burn a whole easily. But the neck is welded and I put JB weld around it just to be sure it was air tight. Then painted the tank. Just be sure if you weld it that all of the gas is out of it. Every last vapor. But about the baffles, mine were also cracked and pieces floating I just took them out and it still works fine, but the fuel gauge reads perfect but while moving it moves around a bit.

Re: Fuel Tank

The tank necks are silver soldered on from the factory, not welded.

The 1LEs and 91-2 tanks have the baffles in them to prevent fuel starvation in high G corners and low fuel situations.
I would try and locate a proper 91-2 tank at a junk yard, I can find them fairly easy still in good shape.

I know it was welded but I was afraid if I resoldered it that it would crack again.
