Hey guys, I'm new here, just sold my 4th gen v6 and got an '83 z/28 383 stroker today. I'm very pleased with it, but there is one issue with it that I'd like to fix ASAP, as it is my daily driver. When the engine is cold, it starts right up. However, if the engine is warm, the starter cranks incredibly slowly and it is a little tricky to start. The seller said something about putting a soup can around the starter/starter solenoid or something to act as a heatshield. Any ideas?

 

Heatsoak. It probably has headers that go right next to the starter. Your best bet is a nice aftermarket ministarter from one of the many performance parts suppliers. Much better starters than what came stock on our cars. If on a budget, grab a junkyard starter from a 93-97 Z28. If you want easier but more money, get a cheap chinese LT1 starter from ebay.

Or you can rubberband and duct tape a soup can around the starter... It wont help anything, but it may make you feel better about spending the money on a proper starter that can handle heat from headers.

Or you can buy ceramic coated headers, or wrap your headers in header wrap near the starter.

Its a lot easier to just get a better starter, though.

Looking under the hood I can definitely tell that the previous owner put a lot of work into this thing, so I'm definitely not going to disrespect the car by ghettomatizing it with a soup can. Any recommendations for a good, preferably cheap starter?
