Oil Change Experiance
I just whant to share with you all mi experiance changine the Oil in my 89 GTA for the first time.
I've never had to wirk so hard to change the filter on a car before. Maybe two factors came to play in me having to work so hard. first is that the car is been seatting on my Garage for more than a Year. and the second is that I think the last person that did it was afraid that the Oil Cooler lik Oil.
Anyway first I had to murder the Old filter

Second I discover tha pipe tha was very hard to get off the filter

Third now for the fun part putting the Pipe on the New Filter

Putting the new filter back in place

I don't know if this came factory or it is after market but looks factory to me and if it is it is grate that they put an Oil Cooler on this cars.

Next Time I change the Oil I'll Try to put That pipe first so I can Tight it Good and Then the filter I was so tierd and mad That I was Not Thinking Straight.
Hope you Enjoy the pictures...
BTW I just Found Out I had Dual Catalitic isn't that grate!

Sounds like you figured out that the pipe goes on the motor first, then the filter threads onto the pipe. The pipe is actually the mounting fastener for the cooler to the block. Since that came out, it might have been good to clean the sealing surfaces and replace the o-ring between the cooler and block also. The cooler fastener shouldn't have come out with the filter, but it does happen sometimes. I don't have torque specs in front of me but I think that pipe torques at 50ft lbs or so. Check the factory service manual to be sure. Next time you'll know.

There is also a snap ring that's prolly floating around up on top of the oil cooler.
The snap ring holds the tube in place in the cooler during assembly to the motor. It's not "needed" but it could still be on top of the cooler.

Yes I saw that rubber thin on top. but I didn't get anithing out because it was late at night and I was getting frustrated with the situation. but thanks, I'll change any rubber next Oil Change I do.
I wonder if the same Radiator cools Watter/Engine Oil/Trans Oil, How good of a Job can it do?

Next time - tip the cooler down and check for the snap ring, if it's there grab it. Then clean everything up REALLY well and de-grease the threads and "pipe". Put a little loctite (Blue should be fine) on the threads, put the pipe into the cooler and secure it with the snap ring if it's there. Then put a new o-ring on the top of the cooler and thread the pipe up and snug it up. Wait for the loctite to set up, prime the filter with oil and then install it with a little oil on it's o-ring and next oil change you should be able to just spin the filter off and the 'pipe' will stay with the engine block the way it's supposed to.
