Broken steering pump bracket

This is for a 1989 Camaro RS (2.8L V6)

So I was driving yesterday when I noticed a squealing sound every time I accelerated. I drove the car straight home, and popped the hood to find that the serpentine belt had slipped off. No big deal, until I notice something odd. The steering pump is just hanging out, and the bracket is busted! (See pictures) So my questions are the following:

Since the pump seems fine, is it a reasonably simple job to disassemble everything and replace just the bracket? Also, not sure if you can see it, but the bolt on the lower side of the bracket that goes into the engine block had the head bust off, but the rest of it is still in there.

What could have possibly generated so much force that the bracket would snap. Is it aluminum? I want to make sure that whatever caused this in the first place doesn't happen again.

I had the oil changed last week, and they said there was a small leak, most likely from an old gasket. Could that have got onto the belt causing it to slip? Would the belt slipping to the edge of the pulleys create a change in the tension strong enough to break that bracket?

What other problems should I be looking for? This was pretty obviously a problem, but what else might be going on here?

I have never really had to fix something like this, but am willing to try. That said, I do need to get around, so if it comes down to it, how much should I expect to pay to have this fixed?

Also, I can take more photos if it helps answer any of these questions, just let me know.

Re: Broken steering pump bracket

the cast aluminum bracket has been repaired(welded)before-broke in a different place this time.Could post this in the v6 section to see if this breakage is known to happen the v6s or what the cause could be.

Also, if anyone here happens to have these brackets, I am currently in the market to buy both!

Re: Broken steering pump bracket

One of the hoses was really easy to get off. The one coming from the bottom of the pump (the pressure hose?) is not nearly as easy. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or not. Should I be trying to loosen the smaller or larger hex nut?

Do I need a cheater bar to loosen these? Not much room in there, and these guys wont budge.

Re: Broken steering pump bracket

it's the smaller hex you want to get off-the larger hex holds the pump reservoir to the pump, often the the larger hex will try to turn while wrenching the smaller one.Might be easier to take the pressure line loose at the steering gearbox in order to get the pump out of the car for more working room.Tubing wrenches should be used as the hex fittings are soft steel and can flatten and round off when normal wrences are used.

Re: Broken steering pump bracket

So I took out the pump, and it appears that the rear bracket was not the original. See attached

I found someone online that has a rear bracket, but he said that he found several different part numbers for different rear brackets, and wasn't sure if what he has will work or not.

Another guy I talked to just recently sold one like this:

He mentioned that some of the brackets have four holes and the pump mounts to it in two places (like this photo), whereas others have two holes and the pump mounts in only one place. I imagine only mounting it in one spot contributes to these things breaking, so can someone confirm that the bracket in the second photo is the one I need?

Thanks
