Fuel Tank Too Hot?
My daughter drove our '82 Z-28 with Crossfire on the Power Tour this year. The car made the long haul and maybe knocked down 16-17 MPG.
A little background on the car - it has the original steel tank and it has an Edelbrock cat back exhaust system with a stock-style crossflow muffler. It also has a TH-350 and 3.73s in the rear end.
When we stopped to fill up with gas after a long run on the highway, I noticed that the gas tank neck was hot to the touch. We were getting lots of pressure build up in the tank too. At one stop, u pulled a couple of hoses off the carcoal canister to make sure nothing was stopped up, and we could hear a gurggling noise coming from the line coming from the tank - I would swear it sounded like boiling fuel.
The car had no fuel delivery issues that we could tell.
Could the extended highway driving have heated up the tank that much? Or maybe it was recirculation of the fuel through the hot engine compartment? Anyone else had a similar issue?
