Overheating and the Coolant temp sensor

So the gauge in my car keeps saying it's getting hot but when i pulled over the temperature seemed fine. I got back in my car started driving and the gauge read between 200 to 220, then it jumped to the max, and slowly went back down. This has been occurring since last night and I'm not sure if my car is actually getting hot or if my sensor is malfunctioning.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I know my car has several temperature sensors and I'm curious which one does the gauge use to determine the temp of my vehicle? Is it the Coolant temperature sensor? If so where it it located.

Oh BTW, my car is a 1991 RS 5.0 TBI.

Whenever I post anything on the e46 forum for help with my BMW, I get replies. ThirdGen on the other hand, I always have to wait days and search through hundreds of pages of BS to find the answers I'm looking for -_-

Re: Overheating and the Coolant temp sensor

The temp sensor that goes to the dash gauge is located on the drivers side between the first two cylinders. The sensor that turns on the fan is on the passenger side between the last two cylinders.
