bog under load

my 87 firebird has a gen 1 350 with roughly 10k miles

old qjet intake

"RV" cam i dont know the specs.

edelbrock 1405 carb (recently rebuilt)

350 bottom end 10k miles on stock rebuild

305 58cc heads 10k miles

hedman headers

quickfuel FPR set to 5psi

engine vacuum is at idle is round 14 inhg

i dont have a tach (base model bird) so i dont know exactly where my idle is.

it starts and idles great but boggs under load. it is fine if i baby it around town but it wont pull at all. when i floor the go pedal it starts to pull but immediately falls on its face and wont accelerate at all. i try to accelerate during this time and it just tries to die wont rev up at all. but if i let it idle for say 15-20 seconds i can drive again just not fast

about the cam my father in law is the one who bought the engine from a local machine shop he doesnt remember the cam specs other than its an rv cam. i do remember that its slightly smaller lift than an lt1 cam but thats all i know.

What distributor are you using?

Where is the timing set?

Re: bog under load

I'm using a stock hei dist. I have tried all sorts of timing settings. Its currently at 20* with the vac advance unhooked at idle.

Re: bog under load

Verify fuel pressure at the carb inlet. Need at least 3psi. 4-6 is better.

Re: bog under load

i got it figured out. i set my timing to 14* base and the floats in my carb were way too low. it runs great now other than the fact it has 2.73 gears lol
