Need Help Troubleshooting a Starting Problem
I have a 1992 3.1 V6 Camaro that broke down a year ago and just underwent an engine swap. I did as much of the labor as I could considering the fact that the swap was the first time I've ever worked on a car. A local mechanic finished the job for me, and when I got the car back it was running fine. I took it for a drive around the block and parked it in my driveway. When I went to start the car later it sputtered and turned off and I had no interior or dash lights. I thought I ran out of gas (it was low) so I put a gallon in it and I charged the battery, and all my lights work but the starter won't make a sound, so I checked all the connections and all of them have power, and I had my starter tested and it's fine. When I put the starter back on and I turned the key the starter engaged and it sounded like the engine wanted to start but it didn't, and it didn't do this again. I also checked my fuse panel and all the fuses are good too. The mechanic told me that the car was idling fine when they had it and when I picked it up I know it worked well. I need help as to figuring out what it could be. Could the diode in my key be bad? Could it be a poor connection or a faulty ignition switch? Please help.
Re: Need Help Troubleshooting a Starting Problem
Check the coil wire from the dist.
Check the 25amp ecm fuse (engine bay).
Make sure both nuts on the starter are secured tightly.
If it will turn over and still will not start: remove a plug wire, turn the car over and hold the wire close to the plug to cause an arc. (checking for spark)
If you have spark: Is your fuel pump working; Do you hear it prime when the ignition is turned to the on position?
Just a few troubleshooting ideas. I'm sure a lot of us on here have had our beloved thirdgens not start a time or two. Can anyone else chime in?
