What are these for/are they necessary?
Sorry to be dense, I would do a search for these but I have no idea what they are called...
See the picture. Underneath where the air cleaner is, there are these flat plastic pieces on each side. They seem to be held on by plastic clips and are pretty flimsy. I was going to remove them to install my new trans cooler, not sure what their purpose is. Air deflection or something?

Keeping debris and liquid road-slime from flying up straight onto the air filters of a stock TPI intake assembly. Other 3rd gens have that plastic shield all the way up at the top of the radiator (which makes a handy nuts-and-bolts shelf when doing minor driveway miantenance), but TPIs have their filter assy. up in that area there so they put those plates down lower.
