Does anyone know how the functional hood scoop works on a 1983 Trans Am
305 HO. It used to work, its not the motor and I have power to the motor. Is there some kinds vacuum that hooks up to that little thing behind the brake booster. Between the hood scoop and the windsheild washer eveything else works. Or does anyone have some HD pics of a stock 305 motor with
the original 4 barrel carb. I could really use it.

I don't know details, because I've never had a Firebird, but I believe it is powered by vacuum and controlled electrically.

Since you hadn't received any responses, perhaps this will help stimulate a proper answer for you.

 

I know the 81 camaro had an induction hood that had an electric actuator. Engine didn't have to even be running to trigger it, just ignition on. I don't see them taking a step back to go to 60s technology in 3rd gens.

 

Any update on this? My scoop is non-functional at the moment as well, I would like to make it functional so i can drive in the rain.

So did some searching. There is the above part (vaccume relay) and there is a solenoid (electrical) on the scoop itself. How to reconnect everything together, I dont know. Will try to collect information here in one spot.

 

Thanks, That's one part the other one I took off I will have to take a pic of it. It has a little nipple on the end of it. So maybe a vac hose goes from the part to the carb.
That's why my flap does not open. I still have the old rodchester and comp.control
in it.

 

The solenoid always has ignition power. It is opened when zero vacuum is achieved through that vacuum switch. The switch itself makes a ground for the solenoid is all. It isn't computer controlled, and does not have power going through it. It's vacuum feed was off the carb IIRC, hope that helps.

 

Okay here's what I got after checking out my system today. I have a chewed/broken wire and I dont know what all the parts of my system are. I put the engine back in the car about 1.5 years ago and who knows if i routed all the vaccume lines correctly.

But, I wonder what went on the drain holes on the bottom of the scoop (see picture). When i bought the car it had water on/in the air cleaner lid, Im assuming from the scoop being failed open.

Any thoughts here?

 

Yep that's it so were does the vacuum line go? I have power to the motor but I guess
I took the vacuum line off that little nipple.

I thought that was part of the windshield washer system, that does not work either.

 

Ill take a picture of where i routed mine. Its T'ed in with two other lines that go to the black "canister" strange thing to the left that you can actually kind of see in the first picture.

That being said, i dont know if that is the correct routing as i pulled my engine a year ago and replaced a bunch of lines.

Also can you take a picture of your wire routing? it seems i have to re-wire mine.

Also does this fail open or closed?

 

Nothing went on the water drains

 

Put the vacuum hose on the little nipple next to the relay still no functional hood scoop,
maybe I hooked it up wrong not sure we're it goes. I will check again later.
